This great piece in Sunday's New York Times about Jason Everman - former member of both Nirvana and Soundgarden who was kicked out of both bands right before they hit it big and was forced to change the road he was on - becoming an Army Ranger, then joining the elite Special Forces and is now studying at Columbia University.
