Hi.

Thanks for reading my blog. Please reach out if I can help you!

Caught In A Bad Romance (with your career)?

Caught In A Bad Romance (with your career)?

The Gaga Formula.

(Yeah, good luck trying to stop singing this. Sorry.)

Do you hate going to work? Feel like you’re not going in the right direction? Look at the clock every five minutes and realize that its still only 10:10? On a Tuesday? Feel like everyone else is "ahead of you" in the ratrace? That the grass is greener on the other side?

You, my friend, are probably in a bad relationship with your career. Caught in a bad romance.

What would you tell a friend who is in a bad relationship?

GET OUT.

Now, we all know it's not that simple.

You can't just slip out the back, Jack. Make a new plan, Stan. Hop on the bus, Gus. Or just drop off the key, Lee.

You work hard for the money. Bills to pay. Food to put on the table. Disposable income to dispose of. And that sweet car you have isn't going to pay for itself. So you can't just walk away, Renee.

And remember, its called “work” for a reason. Its supposed to be work. You actually have to put in effort to get results. And the grass is always greener, so don’t think that you’ll suddenly end up working in a dream.

But, as Paul Simon sang,

"The problem is all inside your head", she said to me. The answer is easy if you take it logically. I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free."

The first place to start to figure out whether you're in need of a vacation or a new career is by answering these two key questions:

  1. Are you using your unique talents and leveraging your strengths in the job / career you’re in?
  2. Are you excited by the industry or company that you’re in?

If you answered NO to either of these questions, do yourself a favor: start planning your escape. The mission of this here blog is to help you understand how to extricate yourself, plan your next move and have the confidence to actually make the move.

And this is one situation where you will truthfully be able to use the old “It’s not you, it’s me” line.

(BTW if you answered “NO”, congrats. But please share this blog with your friend in the bad relationship. While singing Bad Romance or 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, of course.)

My sincere apologies to Paul Simon for including him in the same blog post as Lady Gaga. Clearly, there is no comparison.
