I Could've Been A Patriots Fan.
In 1994, I moved to Boston after a few years living in Germany.
I faced a tough decision upon my repatriation - become a Patriots fan, or stay true to my roots and stick with my Philadelphia teams, especially the Eagles. In what can only be described as the sports equivalent of choosing to invest in Enron instead of Google, I chose the Eagles over the Patriots.
Since 1994, in the ensuing 23 years, the Patriots have gone on the greatest run of any US professional sports franchise. Of all time. As Patriots' owner Robert Kraft said,
During the same time, the Eagles have been to one Super Bowl. That we lost to the Patriots. During which our QB puked. And a few other useless playoff appearances.
Why does this matter?
Sometimes we follow the herd and do what everyone else is doing because it seems like the right thing to do. Sometimes we make decisions because of who we are. I could've jumped on the Pats bandwagon when they became good (like many people in New England who shall remain nameless...) but I'm not a bandwagon fan - it wasn't true to who I am.
In hindsight - which is always 20/20 - maybe I made the wrong choice. Because its looking more and more unlikely that i'll ever see an Eagles Super Bowl parade in my lifetime, isn't it? But I keep the faith that it will happen someday.
And that's who I am.
At least my alma mater Villanova won the National Championship in 2016.
As my friends know, I won't be cheering for the Pats on Sunday because I'm still a diehard Eagles fan and not a sports bigamist. But I hope they win. Because the parade route in Boston goes right past our office window.
